After years of delay , Kaduna State government under Governor Nasir El-Rufai is set to break
the jinx after taken bold step to finally complete the multi billion Naira Zaria water project next year .
The project targets to supply water to eight local government areas of the state when completed .
The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Aliyu Lere,
who gave the deadline while addressing journalists during the
inspection tour of Zaria water project sites said the work is now 90%
He also disclosed that the Zaria gigantic water treatment plant would be
completed in December while the entire project will be completed next
year 2017 to end the decades of suffering by residents over non
He noted that when completed the money spent on the Zaria and environs
water project would be put at an estimated sum of 69 billion naira.
Lere who urged residents to cooperate with the contractors for
speedy work , said , “We are expecting the whole project to be completed
by July 2017 , that is the aspect of the construction of the
transmission lines and the distribution, but the construction of the
water treatment plant will be completed in December and by that time
there will be serious improvement in the supply of water even before
“By the time we are completing the project in 2017 we would have spent
an estimated sum of 69 Billion Naira , that includes, the construction
of the water treatment plant constructed by the state government and
the Dam constructed by the Federal government and others already
“The water requirements currently for Zaria and environs is about 100
Million litters a day and what we have on ground is 60 million liters
now. Even though, it is not operating at optimal capacity because of
the dilapidated nature of the old water works and the challenges of
power, but by the time this new ones come on board we will have a
total capacity of 210 million liters a day, which will have the
potential of not only supplying to Zaria and Sabon Gari with potable
water but additional communities within the 6 local government areas
that surround Zaria and Sabon Gari”.
The commissioner further explained , “There are other areas that has to do with expansion and the rehabilitation of the old pipes that has already
been laid tens of years ago. There is also the construction of the
booster stations that will take water to Zaria and other envisaged
local government areas that are to benefit from the project. There is
also the water treatment plant that hopefully would be completed by
end of this year .
“There are so many other projects you can see going
on in Zaria , particularly the construction of transmission lines
going round Zaria for about 500 KM . You can see that the whole of
Zaria is turning into a construction site and we thank God”.
On his part,Dr.Henry Kiemeg, Project Manger Gamji Nigeria
Limited, handling part of the Zaria water project complained about some
residents who illegally built on right of way ,saying the ongoing
laying of water pipelines in some areas was a challenge.
Kiemeg ,who commended the present administration for its commitment to
end water problem in Zaria and environs said: “The way the Kaduna
state government under Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has supported us is quite encouraging ,unlike what obtains in the past , where
government will be pushing you here and there without proper mobilsation .
” We are happy to say that we got real support to deliver and this is unprecedented, this
is a great motivation, because any contractor that has a smooth way to
do carry out his job without any kick back and front will perform better.
” We thank the commissioner who works so hard, diligent and committed always with us in the field. Let me say that I want to use this opportunity to advice other Nigerian Governor’s to follow the foot
steps of Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
” This is governance at is best,
putting the interest of the people first. So if any contractor is not
performing now , you have no reason to complain, because the Government
is giving you that is required” .He noted.
